Summer School on Mobility, Data Mining, and Privacy 2010

"I know where you'll be next summer!"

The 1st Summer School on Mobility, Data Mining, and Privacy is co-organized by the FP7/ICT project MODAP "Mobility, Data Mining, and Privacy" and the COST Action IC0903 MOVE "Knowledge Discovery from Moving Objects". This is the first doctoral school ever on the 'hot' intersection of three domains: modeling and management of moving object databases (Mobility), data analysis and knowledge discovery from mobility data (Data Mining), and privacy aspects that raise when processing human mobility (Privacy).

The goals of the summer school include (a) promoting recent research results obtained in the joint field of Mobility, Data Mining, and Privacy, and (b) developing contacts and collaboration among young researchers working on the field.

The school targets doctoral students and young postdocs as well as a small number of senior researchers working on database management, machine learning and data mining, GIS, statistics, law informatics, etc. During their stay, a limited number of up to 40 selected doctoral students and postdocs will receive intensive training in the above topics taught by well-known and expert tutors; the participants will also be given an opportunity to present their own work in a poster session, and receive a feedback.

The list of tutors includes:

  • Natalia Gennady Andrienko, Fraunhofer IAIS, Germany
  • Fosca Giannotti, ISTI/CNR, Italy
  • Marta Gonzales, MIT, USA
  • Dimitrios Gunopulos, U. Athens, Greece
  • Bert-Jaap Koops, Tilburg U., Netherlands
  • Dino Pedreschi, U. Pisa, Italy
  • Nikos Pelekis, U. Piraeus, Greece
  • Sandy Pentland, MIT Media Lab, USA
  • Yucel Saygin, Sabanci U., Turkey
  • Christian Wietfeld, TU Dortmund, Germany

Place, Venue, Weather, Travel information:

Rhodos (Rhodes, in English) is one of the largest and most beautiful Greek islands, in eastern Aegean Sea. With a history dating back to the Neolithic Era, Rhodos has been continuously inhabited for 4000 years. The medieval Old Town has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The summer school is hosted at Sensimar Port Royal Villas & Spa, at the eastern coast of the island and only a few meters from a pebble beach. Usually, the weather is pleasant in Rhodos during the last week of August; rainfall is rare, days are sunny and dry (average values for temperature: 29C, humidity: 58%, sunshine per day: 11h, wind: N NW 5). Regarding transportation, in summer one can choose among several daily flights from Athens to Rhodos airport (RHO) serviced by the two Greek airlines (Olympic Air and Aegean Air) as well as direct flights from major European hubs, including London, Frankfurt, Munich, Paris, Amsterdam, Milano.
